About
Having previously studied Child Development, aspiring illustrator/author Georgia Cowley takes inspiration from her work with children and young people struggling with learning and mental health difficulties. She is passionate about using children’s literature as a tool to help children navigate their emotional experiences, aiming to imbue her characters with a humour and liveliness which she hopes cuts through the difficult subject matter. One of her favourite things about making pictures is hiding tiny details for children to spot and puzzle over. Georgia’s poem “Brave” was recently shortlisted for the Poetry division of the Bournemouth Writing Prize 2021.
The Chase
Georgia wrote ‘The Chase’ while working as a teaching assistant, observing the class dynamics in the playground. The book aims to encourage children to accept and embrace their feelings of insecurity and fears of failure. The artwork was inspired by her daily walks during the lockdowns and observational drawings in her local park; a place which became very important to her over the past year as the man-made world ground to a halt.
As the setting remains constant throughout this story, Georgia experimented with angles and creating a sense of movement, to keep her compositions exciting and dynamic.
The coloured pages of the project were made predominantly with gouache, pencil and crayon.
Rat Race
This (mostly) silent book was inspired by drawings from Georgia’s sketchbook. It incorporates her love of costume, theatre and, above all, teeny tiny things. She loved looking into the Art Deco imagery for sequence; mixing together research with imagination to create a believable world.
The spreads were hand drawn with pencil, then edited and coloured using procreate.
