About
Ruozhao was born on a mild late spring day in China. She loved drawing anything interesting on top of her homework and desk during her childhood. Observing children and nature being her favourite things, Ruozhao draws inspiration from the gestures of the characters and the drama of the scenes. She just started her illustrator career and dreams of creating a world of childlike innocence.
The Rainy Day
The Rainy Day is a picture book about three children playing on a rainy day, showing childishness and happiness. As rain starts to fall, May, Sasa and their young brother Pipi stay at home and start to explore the magic of the rain.
“What does the rain sound like? What does the rain feel like? What does the rain taste like? Why doesn’t the tree have a raincoat?” …Go on an adventure to discover the mysteries of rain!
Ruozhao painted in watercolour and coloured pencil and used warm orange and cool-toned blue to differentiate between the interior and the exterior. She focuses on the water vapour on the windows and the drawings left by the children on the windows.
The Skipping Rope
The Skipping Rope is a wordless sequential narrative depicting a young boy who is asked to skip rope with his classmates in PE class, even though he is intimidated by the ropes.
The narrative of this story was inspired by ruozhao’s own fear of skipping rope. Her fear that she would fall face down, get tangled in the rope or trip over it has not gone away until now.
At the end of the story the little boy gets involved in jumping rope in a different way – shaking the rope and helping his classmates jump over it. It reflects the fact that people can choose not to force themselves to challenge what they fear, but to adapt to it in a different way.
