20,000 Days on Earth directed by Iain Forsyth (MA Fine Art, 2004) and Jane Pollard (MA Fine Art, 2004) won Televisual Best Arts Documentary at this year’s Grierson British Documentary Awards.
The Grierson Awards commemorate the pioneering Scottish documentary filmmaker John Grierson (1898 – 1972), famous for Drifters and Night Mail and the man widely regarded as the father of the documentary. Established in 1972, the Grierson Awards recognise and celebrate documentaries from Britain and abroad that have made a significant contribution to the genre and that demonstrate quality, integrity, creativity, originality and overall excellence.
20,0000 Days on Earth is drama and reality combined in a fictitious 24 hours in the life of musician and international cultural icon, Nick Cave. With startlingly frank insights and an intimate portrayal of the artistic process, the film examines what makes us who we are, and celebrates the transformative power of the creative spirit.
Iain and Jane met whilst studying their undergraduate in Fine Art and Art Theory at Goldsmiths returning to Goldsmiths 10 years later to complete their MA in Fine Art. They have been working together for over 20 years. In 2014, they won Best Debut Director at BIFA and were shortlisted for a Jarman Award. 20,000 Days on Earth was also nominated for a BAFTA for Best Documentary this year.
