Ann Bigwood: “Canoeing in the high street”

At the time of the Lewisham flood, my husband and I were living in Granville Park. Foolishly we decided to go out to see what was happening and photograph the floods.

We waded from the bottom of Granville park to check on a friend in Lee High Road and on to where the water ended, just past the junction with Eastdown Park.

We saw a young man canoeing in the high street ( I wasn’t quick enough with my camera). Buses were making huge waves and someone was pushing a car near the clock tower. The water was thigh deep in places, but not very cold.

A few days later, when the water had subsided, I went to Woolworths where the ground floor was trading, although the basement was still flooded. I could hear goods in the basement bumping into each other as they floated about.

Ann managed to capture some images of 1968 floods.
