Postcards: From the church to the pub

Image: Postcard collected at Hilly Fields Summer Fayre 2023

I remember Charlie the tramp in Deptford Hight Street who was give tea in a milk bottle by Purdy’s the wet fish shop, wo he was related to.

When I walked around the area there were 14 pubs in the High Street and after mass, all the Catholic men would come out of Church and go straight into the pub.

Usually the Mechanic’s Arms next to it.

Postcards: The Battle of Lewisham

Image: Postcard collected at Hilly Fields Summer Fayre 2023

My father ran a shop in Lewisham Way at the time of the Battle of Lewisham. We remained open although getting dirty looks from passing police cars.

There was a stream of people going to New Cross, many caring carrier bags full of bottles. We knew where the marchers were going because we had the radio tuned to the police frequency.

Postcards: Lovers in the rain

Image: Postcard collected at Hilly Fields Summer Fayre 2023

About 1970: I used to walk my dog late at night around Hilly Fields.

One night, in pouring rain, the dog and I came across a couple enjoying each other on the Vicars Hill side of the fields. The didn’t care and we; the dog and I continued on!

Postcards: Stranded bus

Image: Postcard collected at Hilly Fields Summer Fayre 2023

When I first moved to Brockley, a double decker bus got stuck on the corner of Foxberry Road right outside my house.

It was very peculiar…

Postcards: The storm of 1987

Image: Postcard collected at Hilly Fields Summer Fayre 2023

The first time I came to Lewisham I stayed at my sisters’ place in Mottingham (on a lilo) as she was a student at Goldsmiths.

When I woke up in the morning there were loads of trees uprooted – it was the storm of 1987 and I’d slept right through it on a lilo!

Postcards: Fritz

Image: Postcard collected at Hilly Fields Summer Fayre 2023

Part of Lewisham for the last 20 years has been Fritz.

Fritz took it on himself to direct traffic in Catford for many years. Any bus drivers will “fondly” remember him.

He is such a part of Lewisham, he cannot be missed.
