Quaggy, Woolworths, Wimpy
We used to play in the Quaggy as kids. We were all brought up the same – no money but we looked after each other.
If you were good – really good – we were taken to Wimpy.
We had one coal fire and a tin bath out in the yard, we had a mangle. We lived in one house – two families. Everybody looked out for everybody.
We visited Woolworths and we’d buy the packs of broken biscuits.
The milkman would come every day. Women would nip out and buy food fresh, that was part of their job.
There were horse and carts going up and down the street.

Bhs, Mothercare, C&A
There are some shops here I remember.
Jewelry shops – there was two of them, but only one left now.
Mothercare was just at the corner. And there were really good old pubs outside. I like to go there a lot.

Ponti’s, Saturday morning coffee & paninis before shopping!
The mall has evolved as retail has changed, but the loss of pick + mix at Woolworths and treats at Thorntons and the old brands like Bhs, is such a shame. There was more of a coffee + shop culture!

Stamp shop, Green Shield
My Nan lived in Tunbridge Wells but I’d meet her in Lewisham and she’d get her stamps. That’s where you’d exchange stamps for household items.
ABC Cinema it was good value – we’d go once a week. I saw Star Wars there.

Used to work in Bhs
It was brilliant – a good store. It’s changed for the worst. Look at those flats – whose going to live in them? Only people with money.

Mothercare
I used to buy things there but they moved to Greenwich. It was a popular store for kids.

Chiesmanns, Marks & Spencers
There was a dancehall above Chiesmas – I was courting my wife, the windows were open, a beautiful summers evening, it has poured with rain. The air smelt amazing.
Marks & Spencers – 12 died in a bomb raid – V1
We lived in the shelter in the garden but the trouble was it filled with water.
In the classroom there were great RSJ steel gurders and I used to run home for fear of the thing coming down.

The whole family had stalls in the market in the 70s. It was a magnet for people all around.
They mainly sold West Indian products and there was a shop blasting out reggae – everyone was dancing. It was a great atmosphere.
