Transltion Attempts (film series, 2017)

Following last year documentary series “Latin America: Life and death of the state”, “Translation Attempts” is the name of the second documentary film exhibition series that will take place in Goldsmiths and its part of the activities organised by the Latin American Hub. Introduced by a relevant scholar followed by a performance, live music or video art, and then the film itself, each session will open debate on how different relevant concepts flow and are translated between Europe and Latin America and the difficulties of this “exercise”.

The series has two aims. The first one is to generate a trans-regional and interdisciplinary dialogue between Latin America and other regions, focusing on the difficulties and challenges when talking and dialoguing about ‘common’ issues and on the way knowledge migrates and is exchanged.

Derived from the latter comes a second aim which is to question the alleged universal meaning of concepts – such as violence, oppression, neoliberalism, land, development, faith and others – when observed from a Latin American perspective. Placed in the Andes, the Amazonas, the streets of Montevideo or the Mexican/US border, the series pretends to show that global notions only acquire truly sense when situated in specific landscapes.

With this series, we pretend to engage not just with the academic community but also with a broader public. That is why we intend to promote this series in different academic and non-academic spaces. The series considers the following films.
