Matrescence

Interweaving my painting practice with my experience as an art psychotherapy trainee, I have been exploring the theme of matrescence; the psychological and physical process of becoming a mother. The time-based medium of animation allowed me to pictorially embrace this journey, celebrating both its wonder and the tensions felt by mother and child in the separation and weaning process.

Collaborating creatively with my partner and sons holds deep symbolic meaning. My partner (a musician) layered recorded clips of our children to the repetitive cutting and sticking by my older son and I. Throughout this process I embraced the interplay between creation and destruction, helping me to exercise my ability to contain creative chaos both literally and metaphorically.

  1. Great film and sound, reminds me of Winnicott’s essay ‘Hate in the countertransference’
