Jellyface (revisited)

Miriam Kilpatrick’s work uses food with the media of performance to explore introspection and the human condition to want control. Miriam has found ways of creating food containers in the shape of her own body to explore her capacity as an artist and now art psychotherapist trainee, coexisting together in a physical and mental form.

Jellyface was made from gelatine inserted with a mix of condensed milk, food colouring and gelatine.

Through the process of revisiting a method, Miriam has used previous work when reflecting upon how being on placement has felt over the past year. The clear jelly in the shape of her face embodies herself as the artist and as a trainee art psychotherapist, alongside her desire to be transparent through the process of the course and placement. The colours and how they spread through the jelly made Miriam think of the process of reflecting on projections and transference or countertransference. With more time and gravity, the colours spread through and out of the jelly. At times it felt like a painful process that created ruptures, but in the end, produced chaotic beauty that still held its structure.
