I work therefore I am
Keywords: jobs ; works ; bureaucracy ; Sisyphus
Materials: wood, aluminium extrusion, camera, screens, physical electronic components
Inspired by David Graeber’s observation on the pervasive existence of meaningless jobs, followed by the increasing anxieties of job loss resulting from technological advancements today , “I work therefore I am” portrays a futile work environment by a physical installation, inviting a reflection about labour and jobs. The installation depicts a bureaucratic system which features a factory line that continually produces forms only to erase them, symbolizing the cyclical and fruitless nature of certain pointless job nature. Layers of managerial system further accentuate the pointlessness of the system. By incorporating visitors into the Sisyphean system, the installation aims to spark dialogue and introspection on the meaning and nature of jobs in today’s society.
