“Crystal Palace” is an immersive sculpture that explores themes of beauty, effacement, and anti-monumentalism. The artwork includes both tangible and intangible elements. Feelings of awe, transience and beauty commingle with wistfulness and something darker. As viewers kneel and pray, the sculpture comes to life, generating a stream of delicate and exuberant bubbles. These bubbles – symbolic of an untainted existence – represent purity, rebirth, and the ephemeral nature of beauty. In juxtaposition with the bubbles is the submissive act of kneeling, which humbles the participant and underscores the paradoxical mechanisms by which such “pure” and beautiful forms come about: self-abasement, self-denigration, submission. Ultimately, the work operates at the intersection of the profane and sacred, beautiful and base, everlasting and transient – in order to complicate, for the participant, such classically simple and discreet notions.
