The work titled by the coordinates, (37.5468871, -122.5149481), signifies a beach located near the west coast city of San Francisco. This particular location holds deep emotional resonance for me, as it intertwines with the memory of my grandmother. A year after my grandmother’s passing, my mother, in China, honored my grandmother’s last wishes with a sea burial. On the anniversary of her death, while my mother visited the beach near the site of the sea burial in China, I found solace on a beach across the Pacific. On that day, the bay was shrouded in its typical thick fog, which veiled my sight and mirrored the hazy contours of memory and longing. There’s an ancient Chinese verse that goes: “A bright moon rises above the sea, those far apart share this moment together.” It speaks of distant souls gazing at the same moon, finding a connection, and sharing a moment transcending distance. As I stood enveloped by the dense fog, feeling the cool moisture of the Pacific, I felt this atmospheric tether linking my mother and me across the oceanic divide. As we are trying to remember those who’ve departed, our memories often seem elusive, as if we’re searching for something just beyond our grasp. (37.5468871, -122.5149481) symbolizes the fleeting nature of such a momentary desire: reaching into the mist, attempting to grasp the intangible and connect with it.
