Professor Diamond Ashiagbor
Professor Diamond Ashiagbor PhD is Professor of Law at the University of Kent.
She has been Director of Research at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London and Professor of Labour Law at SOAS. She won the Society of Legal Scholars / Peter Birks Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship for her book on European Union employment law and policy and has held visiting academic appointments at Columbia University, New York, at Melbourne Law School and at Osgoode Law School in Toronto. She is an honorary bencher of Middle Temple.
Professor Ashiagbor believes that law, and in particular labour law, should be an instrument of social justice.
She says that paid and unpaid work is central to our societies’ attempts to grapple with contested questions of fairness, redistribution, equality, justice, development, human rights and social change.
Growing up, it never occurred to her that a career, or even a job, in academia was an option and now she says she is very fortunate that her work is intellectually challenging, socially relevant, and wide-ranging.
