Professor Joan Anim-Addo
Professor Joan Anim-Addo B.Ed, MA, PhD is Professor of Caribbean Literature and Culture and Director, Centre for Caribbean and Diaspora Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London.
In 2016 she received a lifetime achievement award for “invaluable contributions to literature and to literary and cultural studies” from Callaloo, the US quarterly literary journal.
Professor Anim-Addo is a poet. A defining feature of her writing has been a determination to give a voice to Black women, whose experiences and cultural contributions have traditionally not been well documented or respected.
She says that the teaching, developing and researching of literatures of the Caribbean and its diasporas are central to her role, as well as public engagement with the local diasporic community.
The Centre for Caribbean and Diaspora Studies was negotiated by migrants in the 1980s and has been committed to both aims from its beginnings.
