Deptford is Changing: A Creative Exploration of the Impact of Gentrification is part of Anita’s AHRC-funded PhD in Visual Sociology at Goldsmiths. The book is the outcome of a collaborative research project that, together with local residents of Deptford, south-east London, researches and highlights the impact of gentrification and austerity politics on long-term residents. It uses a variety of creative and participatory research methods such as photography, drawing, building models, writing, workshops and walks, as well as interviews, focus groups and discussions, to enable different kinds of responses and the participation of a wide range of people. This project has worked with children, young adults, adults, elderly persons, homeless people, people with disabilities and mental health issues, housing campaigners and activists, from a variety of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. It tells their personal experience of the housing crisis and gentrification. This project forms the basis of Anita’s PhD Thesis.
The book can be purchased as a paperback directly from Anita (anita.strasser@gold.ac.uk) or from The Word Bookshop in New Cross.
