Our students walk and think with the books, discussed in our lectures, all over the city. In this zine, produced in lockdown, the MA Gender, Media, Culture students have gathered their responses to Kara Walker’s Fons Americanus installed in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall (2020), as a collection of thoughts to be shared transnationally with the artist herself. We have approached the installation in the context of a lecture on space, nation and gender. Walker twists the consensus produced by monuments to empire and nation, towards the violence of sea-faring histories.
