Sound system outernational 6: vibrations united: music, technology and diaspora a virtual conference on sound system culture taking place on zoom, 9-12 June 2020

Sound System Outernational is an ongoing initiative of practitioners and researchers, dedicated to recognizing, stimulating and supporting sound system culture worldwide. Due to Covid-19, our Sixth Edition will be a bi-lingual virtual conference on Zoom, 9-12 June 2020, followed by affiliated live sound system performances, streamed on Facebook Live.

About the Performers

Thali Lotus (CAYA Sound System, Bedford, UK)
Established by Thali Lotus in 2016, CAYA Sound System is the music hub of the Come As You Are enterprise, which focuses on educating, entertaining and energising through high- vibrating reggae and dub music.

Conscious Way Outernational Sound System (Guadeloupe, FWI)
Based in Guadeloupe, French West Indies, CWO is a collective effort by people from different paths of life to promote education through reggae and dub sound system culture. Unity in Diversity.

Hylu (Unit 137 Sound System, London, UK)
Hylu is a DJ, producer, engineer and the founder of Unit 137 sound system. Unit 137 is based in Lewisham (SE London), and has operated successfully as a sound, artist collective, record label and event production crew since 2012. Hylu creates music with a wide range of influences; reggae, dub, jungle, hip-hop, dubstep and jazz can be heard in his sound. Hylu places importance on a conscious message in his work and collaboration is an essential part of his practice.

Established in 2016 by Professor Julian Henriques of Goldsmiths, University of London, with Leo Vidigal of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil/DeSka Reggae Sound System; Brian D’Aquino of Università degli Studi di Napoli L’Orientale, Naples, Italy/Baba Boom Hi-Fi and other colleagues, including the London-based author and DJ, David Katz, the collective has staged five symposiums on sound system culture in London, Naples and Kingston, Jamaica, each with a range of academics and practitioners participating.
