The weird and wonderful world of Goldsmiths’ Societies

Whatever extra-curricular activities you are into, we have it all covered at Goldsmiths. Politics and International Relations student Terrelle Iziren gives you an overview of some of the weird and wonderful societies at Goldsmiths.

The number of societies on campus keeps growing. Students can join as many sports clubs, political, activist and media groups, religious, ethnic and national communities as they choose – have your pick! Goldsmiths own tech society, Hacksmiths, is one of the most popular communities on campus. Specialising in testing the latest technology, you can expect to get creative in many ways – from learning to code, to building new gaming projects, and pushing the boundaries of physical computing. Expect to see lots of wacky and wonderful events hosted by the society, one of the biggest being an annual Hackathon, often supported by big-name sponsors like Spotify.

If tech and gaming is not your thing, consider joining one of Goldsmiths’ insightful student media platforms: Smiths Magazine and The Leopard. If you would like to put your stamp on student life by holding your university and Students’ Union to account for issues like accommodation, or enhancing diversity in sports teams, this is the one for you. As sports editor at The Leopard, I know we are always looking for people to contribute their film, photography, and design skills, and often have super cool events for you to attend and report on, including the annual sports competition between Goldsmiths and University of the Arts London, and film festivals. Goldsmiths also has its own radio station, Wired Radio. If you enjoy mixing on the decks, or having a chat with your fellow students, the Wired studios may be for you! Current student run shows include Dyke to watch out for, Two and a Half Football Fans, and #SEARCHPARTY.

With Goldsmiths’ student population growing to more than 10,000, Campaigns and Activities Officer Joe Leam describes the benefits this adds to the vibrant atmosphere on campus: “Photography Society is our most popular society this year. It has over 200 members, organising loads of events to support their members in enhancing their photography skills.”

Check out Goldsmiths Students’ Union’s societies page for more information about these societies, and many, many more. You can also follow Wired Radio, The Leopard, and Hacksmiths, on social media.
