Visual Cultures Degree Shows

T’is the season!

This year’s degree shows for VisCult’s undergraduate programmes, BA Fine Art and BA Fine Art & History of Art, will take place this Thursday, 14th June 2018, 18:00 to 21:00.

The shows will continue across the weekend, from Friday 15th to Monday 18th, open everyday from 10:00-19:00 (and 10:00-16:00 on Sunday).

There will also be a party taking place on the Thursday night, split across the usual two venues at the bottom of New Cross Road: The White Hart and The Five Bells. Full information + how to buy wristbands can be found on the Facebook events page.

Please join us next Friday for the opening of “Make It Hot. Cool It Down. Turn It Over.“, a three-day exhibition and event programme, inviting hybrid practices, porous bodies, dirty materials and messy questions to come together. For this collective venture we ask, what happens to an exhibition process when channelled through and practiced as ‘compost’? We are turning to the subterranean living world as it helps us to think about the process of coming together and engaging in a ‘hot’ conversation.

We are struck by the fact that compost is as much about com-position, ‘putting together’, as it is about de-composition, and thus ‘taking apart’: there might be loose contact or engaged dissent, tender touch or hostile rejection. And certainly, questions permeate the pile only to be multiplied: What are the conceptual limitations of working with this organic figure of compost and how is it re-worked when pushed and pulled in different directions, when brought in contact with synthetics, manufactured or inert material? What are the overarching implications when waste is turned into value? Who is part of the pile and who is not?

Curated by TopSoil, a curatorial and research collective formed by Deniz Kirkali, Sofia Villena and Amelie Wedel.

“Make It Hot. Cool It Down. Turn It Over” includes an exhibition, a soundscape and listening space, a cooking station & collective meal, a reading group and a film screening programme.

The exhibition will include works by Daniel V. Keller, Miriam Naeh, Daisy Parris, Alecs Pierce and Rafal Zajko.

A soundscape and listening space will be curated by Andrea Popelka. With contributions by Lamin Fofana, Human Interference Task Force (Anna Mikkola and Matilda Tjäder), Malte Kobel and Mark Peter Wright, Kajsa Lindgren, Christopher Schmidt and Stefanie Schwarzwimmer.

The cooking station will be taken over by Super Mercato Canaletto (Serra Tansel), with a pickeling workshop with Emily Sarsam, a collective meal, and music by ‘Makkam’.

The film screening programme, ‘(Re)presenting Communal Space’ will be curated by members of Lunchbox Film Club (Dylan Edwards, Kerrin Hille, Rachel Wilson), bringing together film works by Alex Culshaw, Patrick Goddard and Gail Pickering.

“A” reader’s digest facilitated by Kilian O’Dwyer is a textual analysis meet-up, inviting the participant to listen, collage, write or malleably create in response to specifically collaged texts of various writings. All materials will be provided.

2017-18 Spatial Biopolitics Group Presentation & Radio Launch Party

Join us for a talk and discussion about convivial research and its sonic distributions as part of this year’s Spatial Biopolitics group project.

Our research centres on the question: How can a collective of students engaging in collaborative research constitute a space of study that is attentive to the specific political and economic conditions it finds itself operating from within?

In response to this, the group has produced a radio podcast that seeks to address notions of collective authorship, counter-institutional learning, proliferation in the virtual and the sonic as a tool of infrapolitical resistance.

The project emerged out of the strike by university staff across the UK in March, and is understood as an echo of the spatial, economic and political debates kindled by these conditions. But rather than being the focus of our research, these conditions have been understood to have set the parameters and dictated the urgencies underpinning this project. The result is a sonic experiment that attempts to work from within these parameters, seeking to formulate modes of resistance by assembling, recording and proliferating our collective research.

The Shaping of the Message






‘The Shaping of a Message’ is a day symposium organised by Maggie Roberts who is currently a Research Fellow with the Visual Cultures Department at Goldsmiths. She will be joined by staff members Simon O’Sullivan, Ayesha Hameed and Ramon Amaro and long time colleagues John Cussans, Stephanie Moran and Betti Marenko.

Each speaker will present work investigating relationships between climate change, decolonisation, animism, fictioning and digital uncertainty. These are all themes relevant to Maggie Roberts concurrent exhibition, ‘glimmer breach’ at IMT Gallery.

The artist wants to create a platform to share work, research, contexts, problematics and ideas for co creating alternative futures and the decolonisation of thought, whether human or artifical. Maggie has invited individuals whose work is inclusive, radical, sensitive, fictional and in some way an experiment that addresses some of these urgent issues.

The event involves a mixture of conversations, presentations and a participatory fictioning experiment, and encourages an open and intimate atmosphere in which the audience participates with imaginative responses, difficult questions and suggestions of how we move forward as theoreticians, writers, artists, performers etc. We hope that the work in progress /organic /evolving/explorative tone of the event will hold a space open for the shaping of a message together’.


Various Events with Ayesha Hameed

VisCult’s Dr Ayesha Hameed has a number of events coming up over the next few months.

Hameed is currently showing work at Konsthall C in Stockholm as part of the exhibition “Precarious Terrains and Entangled Situations”. The exhibition considers “the colonization of nature, showing the necropolitical machine of ecocide on one side and, indistinction, new forms of resistance inspired by, and linked to, indigenous cultures that see themselves as part of an ecological continuum.” Visit the Konsthall C website for more information. From 25th May to 7th July 2018 at The Show Room, Hameed will be showing a collaborative work as part of the exhibition Working Practices. Together with Hamedine Kane and Tejswini Sonawane, Hameed maps “the distance between the shores of Dakar and the Caribbean imagining the poetry of the African slaves and the Indian indentured labourers who sailed across the Atlantic.”

In this lecture and discussion, Benjamin H. Bratton will consider the role/limits of aesthetics in modelling complex systems operating at scales that confound normal human intuition. Such models may include limited and conditional feats of abstractive (cognitive, technical, formal, figurative, gestural). He will draw together deep time, deep learning, deep ecology and deep states of various kinds: the emergence of intelligence from material complexity, post-Turing Test models of human-AI interaction, synthetic sensing at urban scale, inorganic semiotics, the inscrutability of artificial neural networks, multipolar hemispherical stacks, designing planetary governance and gradient citizenships, and the coupling / decoupling of past, present and future as foundations and alibis.

A Copernican turn in design (and media theory) might be based on how intelligence is imbued in accumulating layers of material technologies (grammer, the grave, the GPU, etc.) that allow successive generations to build on / against them and to automate processes for escaping intuitive biases, not reinforcing chauvinisms. If Anthropogeny is the study of how ancient species became human, then Anthropolysis may be the study of how the human becomes something else. In between is a sort of “humanities” that is based less on celebrating the expressive experience of interiority than on getting outside our own skins to know what we are (and indeed where and when we are) and what to do next.

The world is a model open to design and designation, not by self-reflective human mastery over its sovereign domain, but because our planet uses humans to know itself and remake itself. We are the medium, not the message.

Benjamin H. Bratton is a writer whose work spans Philosophy, Design and Computer Science. He is Professor of Visual Arts at the University of California, San Diego. He is also Program Director of the Streika Institute of Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow, a Professor of Digital Design at The European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, and Distinguished Visiting Faculty at SCI_Arc (The Southern California Institute of Architecture) in Los Angeles.

Alien Time

An Invitation to Time Travel

Series organised by Bridget Crone and Henriette Gunkel

Alien Time extends from the question of futurity to that of time travel. How should we understand time in an age of planetary complexity, outside of experience and in other than human scale? How should we consider time as “alien”, in what dimensions and for what purpose? What circuits, which routes take us to the future or the past? How are we to conceive of a form of time that enables a jump or jump-cut or splice, fast forward or rewind from this moment that we inhabit? Or, alternatively, how do we figure a time that is never itself complete but always underscored by another time and another space?

Ranging from the flicker to the fractal to the stack, as well as precedents from financial to AI and to physics we invite theorists, curators, artists and musicians to discuss the potentials for time outside time as we know it – alien time. Please join us.

Two Upcoming Events with Zach Blas

VisCult’s Zach Blas has two events upcoming in London over the next few weeks.

Tomorrow, on April 28th, Zach’s film Facial Weaponization Communiqué: Fag Face has been selected as part of the XENOMETRICS film programme on “The Scrutiny of the Mechanical Gave over Queer Bodies”, curated by Pedro Marum. The programme will be showing at Mimosa House. Blas will be in conversation with Marum following the programme. For more information, visit the Facebook event here.

Degree show season is nearly upon us and VisCult’s joint honours BA Fine Art & History of Art course are holding a fundraiser on 12th May 2018 from 10pm to 3am at Deptford’s Bunker Club. The night will see performances from staff, students and alumni xin, Louis Digital, Gitana and Btech. Tickets are £5 and available here.

Louis Digital:

When he is not scrutinising the urban forms of financial capitalism in Goldsmiths’s Visual Cultures dept, Louis makes tracks. He has previously released records with the Glasgow label Numbers as part of the duo Unspecified Enemies, and as Louis Digital for Warp’s Arcola sub-label. He has also put on the Statdtklang nights with the UCL urban lab, exploring acoustic cities and sonic utopias. His vinyl-only set on the night will take us through some electro, high-tech funk, Chicago acid house and Detroit techno.



Currently based in Berlin, the artist and musician xin has contributed to compilations on Genome 6.66mpb, Intruder Alert and AN BA. The recent BA FA/HA graduate will be releasing their debut EP this spring, and is set to play at Berghain’s Säule later this month. Their explosive and shape shifting sounds are a drift through distant futures and ancient pasts, packed with intense otherworldly landscapes.



The South London based Gitana has previously been a guest for the womxn & non-binary collective UNITI, as well as on NTS radio with Akito. They are currently finishing their BA in Visual Cultures. Their diverse mesh of dance tunes, from bailefunk to dancehall, all induced with that dark undertone, are set to get you hot on the dance floor.



Yet another Goldsmiths graduate and visual artist, Btech organises the Superfluid nights in South London’s White Hart with Eman Resu.
