2020 GFF Edition — Kilo 64

Synopsis

The journey of an ambitious pharmacy graduate who shifts his career and starts a farming business at Kilo 64 off Cairo-Alexandria desert road. Moved by the spirt of the January 25th Revolution, Wael El-Shenawy, 24, starts an agriculture startup with the aim to make a social impact, but not everything goes as planned.

Filmed over two years, Kilo 64 is a tale of two generations as it follows the journey of the young entrepreneur who’s trying to revive his father’s dream, who made the same attempt 20 years ago. A simple personal story that tells a lot about what happened in Egypt for decades.

Amir El-Shenawy
Director & Screenwriter

Amir El-Shenawy is an Egyptian documentary filmmaker. He received his MA in Screen Documentary from Goldsmiths, the University of London in 2017. El- Shenawy’s feature documentary debut, Kilo 64, had its world premiere at Cairo International Film Festival in 2018, and it was the only Egyptian and Arab documentary in competition.

Amir received his BA from the American University in Cairo in 2013, majoring in Media Arts and double minoring in Film and Arab & Islamic Civilisations. He also studied Journalism at the Danish School of Media in Denmark in 2011. Over the years, Amir has directed many short films and documentaries for major Cairo-based international organisations.

In 2019, Amir became an alumnus of Rotterdam Lab, a training workshop at the International Film Festival Rotterdam for promising emerging producers from all over the world. In addition, Amir started in 2019 teaching documentary filmmaking courses at a number of Egyptian universities.

Badr Dahi
Editor

Badr Dahi is an Egyptian film editor and former Hip-Hop artist. He received his BA with highest honors from the Academy of Arts, High Institute of Cinema in Cairo in 2014 after majoring in Film Editing. Badr’s film editing portfolio includes Kilo 64, a feature-length documentary, in addition to many short films; namely, Cairo from 5 to 7, Cairo Syndrome, Inside the Game, The Intended and Burned. Moreover, he edited a large number of TV documentaries and commercials besides music videos and TV shows. 

In 2018, Badr edited Film Independent’s production: Film Arabi, a groundbreaking web series in which filmmakers from the Arab world cover the filmmaking process from script to screen while highlighting the impact of storytelling in our lives. In 2019, Badr volunteered with the UNFPA to teach film editing skills for a group of young students.

Karim El-Shenawy
Producer

Karim El-Shenawy is an Award-winning Egyptian film director. In 2013, he completed his MA degree in directing fiction at Goldsmith College, University of London. Karim’s Filmography includes more than thirty titles between TV series, feature fiction, short fiction and documentaries. With more than fifty official selections in international film festivals, his films won a total of 14 international awards in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. 

His feature fiction debut, Gunshot, produced by iProductions and Film Clinic, was premiered in GFF 2018. He later directed his first TV Series Qabeel for MBC during Ramadan 2019 and was a big success commercially and critically acclaimed. He later directer one of the first Shahid original productions Blood oat| مد لا د هع, a 10 episode series set in Lebanon. 

Throughout his career, Karim was a fellow for a number of prestigious fellowships such as IFP 2011 (USA), IVLP 2013 (USA), Chevening 2014 (UK) and Clore Art and Culture Leadership Program 2015 (UK).

Mohamed Taher
Producer

Mohamed Taher is an Egyptian filmmaker with 10 years of experience in the film industry. He received his MFA degree in Film from The Savannah College of Art and Design in the US. He worked with prominent directors on impactful films and TV series such as Nawara, Eshtebak, Eyar Nari, Qabeel and recently Netflix’s original, Paranormal

Over the years, Taher has produced several fiction and documentary shorts, he recently produced Kilo 64 (2018) a documentary feature and Cairo Syndrome (2019) and currently producing and directing his creative documentary The Fountain of Bakhchisarai, which won the development awards in the latest editions of Cairo International Film Festival and El Gouna Film Festival. Taher’s most notable photography project, Ballerinas of Cairo has gained massive regional and international recognition and been exhibited and published worldwide.
