2020 GFF Edition — Microbial Land II

Synopsis

“Microbial Land II” works to explore ideas of queer ecologies and scale by emphasizing and the microbial sphere of life and reducing the size of the human in order to question ecological hierarchies and societal norms formulated within the current anthropocentric geological epoch. Texture mapped onto this 3D world, is the raw footage of the bacteria, taken by Hari Byles from the Bethnal Green Nature Reserve, along with superimposed footage of two gender-variant partners, who identify as transgender and nonbinary and have their eyes covered by neon tape, and their gentiles outlined as they experience an intimate connection while moving around in this landscape together. This piece calls into questions various norms and hierarchies and in taking away their vision, it allows for other sensory organs and other forms of connection to be amplified, shifting their perception and subjective experience of the world, which formulate hierarchies and societal norms in order to create and imagine new futures, worlds, and possibilities.
