Alumna wins One World Media 2015 Student Award

Congratulations to alumna Julia Dahr (MA Screen Documentary, 2014), whose graduate film won the One World Media 2015 Student Award. Her film, Kisilu – I’ll start with myself, was one of four shortlisted for the award.

The annual One World Media Awards rewards the most outstanding coverage of developing countries and recognises the critical role of journalists and filmmakers in increasing cultural understanding and supporting equality and justice worldwide. The Student Award is given to a piece of media made by a student as part of a journalism or filmmaking course at a university or film school that deals with stories related to the developing world.

Through a video diary and the film team’s observational footage, KISILU follows Kisilu Musya, a Kenyan farmer and father of eight children, living at the front line of changing climate. It is an intimate portrait of a close and strong family and looks at their day-to-day life over three years with their struggle against extreme storms and increasing droughts. We watch as Kisilu starts ambitious community projects in the hope of improving the situation.
