This year’s Telegraph Hill Festival attracted thousands of visitors to engage with the local community in and around the New Cross Gate area. Over 16 days in March/April, 125 events ranging from concerts, art shows and open studios to talks, workshops and open gardens were organised by local volunteers and performers to inspire the community to get involved, celebrate and have fun.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, the Annual Fund was proud to support the Telegraph Hill Festival. This support also enabled the production of a unique community-based and inter-generational film Sharing Stories, edited and directed by Emily Benington (BA Anthropology, 2016).

Sharing Stories is a film where local 11- to 14- year-olds interview older residents of the New Cross Gate area to create a lasting record of their memories and stories, focussed on the residents’ earliest memories of their home life and school days, their knowledge of the local area, their recollections of the second world war and their dreams and ambitions.
The production of this emotive and heart-warming film provided learning opportunities for the young people involved as well as an opportunity for the older people to engage with young people in their community, perhaps picking up a few handy tips along the way such as how to make films on a mobile phone and the basics of using the internet.
Resident Kay Grimshaw recounts the chilling tale of how her grandfather and 167 others were killed in Britain’s worst V2 attack in November 1944 when a V2 rocket hit the site on New Cross Road where Iceland is now, previously a thriving Woolworths store.
Sharing Stories will screen at Curzon Goldsmiths on 15 October 2016, part of Gold on Film, with those featured in the film invited to attend to see themselves on the big screen.
The film is dedicated to Denis Albert Stocker (1927-2016), one of the interviewees in this film.
