Supported by Alumni and Friends: Awaken the Superhero Within You

Throughout the year, generous donations from alumni and friends help to fund a diverse range of activities that support the student experience and benefit the Goldsmiths community. In a new series of blog posts, we will share a selection of projects that demonstrate the difference these projects make at the College.

In spring 2018, Mubeena Nowrung, PhD student and Associate Lecturer in Psychology, led a series of research-based workshops to coach and mentor current students. The workshops followed a successful pilot that took place the following year and helped students to develop the skills required to alleviate stress or anxiety and to build their confidence.

The workshops, ‘Awaken the Superhero Within You’, were co-facilitated by an inspirational life coach and Lecturer in Nursing and Education with over 40 years’ experience in the NHS.

Mubeena’s workshops have contributed to the academic, professional and personal development of current students. The skills they have learned will have an ongoing effect as they practice and apply them in different areas of their lives after they graduate.

Mubeena said: “I have learned how to share the knowledge that I have with others in a way that is meaningful to them. And I would like to continue running these workshops for Goldsmiths students. I have been at Goldsmiths for seven years; it is a special place that has given me many opportunities that have contributed to my academic, professional and personal development.”

Mubeena is currently co-authoring a book based on these workshops and aims to share this widely with students so that they can continue to benefit from the results of this project to enhance their success at Goldsmiths and beyond, irrespective of whether they have attended the workshops or not.

Alumni and friends also generously support students facing financial difficulties and the provision of bursaries, scholarships and prizes. For more information or to make a gift, please visit our website
