The Haghia Sophia (Ayasofya) collage is a homage to my Christian upbringing in my home country Turkey. In the south; our region called Hatay has long housed multi religions (mainly Islam, Christianity and Judaism) languages (Turkish, Arabic, French and the other minorities’ languages) many different cultures and civilisations (Hittites, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Moghols and Turks). The religious and ethnic minorities (Kurds, Alaouites, Christians of the Orient, Armenians, Jews) have co-existed with mutual respect and in peace till today.

Orient, Armenians, Jews) have co-existed with mutual respect and in peace till today. Haghia Sophia in Istanbul has been a crossroad between the Occident and the Orient, Christianity and Islam and has acted as a symbol of tolerance. It felt important to crystallise the worldwide importance that this monument holds as a glimmer of hope in a world of divisions and acknowledging the heart-breaking uncertainty of its future along with the threat to Turkey’s religious minorities.

Turkey has long acted as a bridge. Istanbul sitting on two continents; Asia and Europe, has not only geographical importance but holds a richness of culture, trade and history. The bridge therefore functions as a glue and a reminder of a multi-faceted, complex and contrasting nation.

Working with adults with learning disabilities this year, power and powerlessness have been very prominent themes. With police brutality at the fore-front and having witnessed this across countries, the photograph I’ve taken of the policeman and cat provides some hope in humanity for fighting against the demons that power can hold.

Photography has acted as a powerful tool for me to capture significant moments, and with it to hold many embodied sentiments over time. The digital collages I have made, have explored themes of power, hierarchy, difference and have brought together contrasting aspects of my native Oriental home and adopted Occidental identity.

The idea of using the most beautiful Church-Mosque-Museum of Hagia Sofia to unite West and East, Occident and Orient, Europe and Asia in a fantastic and amazing collage is great job. As for the others too…
