Goldsmiths alumnus Djofray Makumbu was the inaugural recipient of the Alumni Commission Award.
Exhibitions Hub partnered with the London Community Video Archive to launch its first curated project supporting Department of Art alumni. The Exhibitions Hub commissioned Djofray Makumbu to develop a new work in response to the archive.
The film was presented as part of a two-day screening event ‘Hello Mr Officer’ at South London Gallery 19 — 20 Nov 2021.
Inspired by films such as The People’s Account (1987) – a documentary about the Broadwater Farm riot in Tottenham, North London, made by Ceddo Film Collective, held in the LCVA – ‘Hello Mr Officer’ wove together different animation styles, using 2D and 3D drawing, sculpture, painting, clay and stop motion animation to portray a multi-faceted representation of young Black men living in London, counteracting the way they are often typecast and subject to racial profiling by the police.
