A Caribbean Couturier in Lewisham: Workshop space

Alongside the Sylvia’s Space installation was a contemporary making space where apprentice designer, Nicole Bastien-Morris was mentored by Joy Prime to create a new made-to-measure gown inspired by Sylvia Prime’s story and practice.

Nicole’s reflections on the apprenticeship:

I am a self-taught seamstress and tailor of Caribbean descent, with a diploma and Bachelors degree knowledge of bespoke tailoring, pattern cutting, illustration and draping.

Making clothes was quite common in my family and culture. I watched and learned from my grandmothers and mother. I would sew holes in my school uniform and tights, as well as cross stitching and knitting, from a very young age.

My love of clothes making started from a young age. I’d draw outfits I thought would be future trends from the age of 7 or 8. In my teens I’d always make my outfits unique as I did not want to dress like anyone else.

The internship has shown me that I am capable of working to tight deadlines to produce a top quality garment. I learned new techniques and it allowed me to interact with the community where I had grown up, meeting like minded creatives.

The internship has also given me greater confidence in myself and catapulted me into bringing my dream together more than ever. It has opened many doors and the last event I was invited to was a conversation and pledge to support more Black Futures within the creative industry, something I feel very strongly about.

I want to inspire creative young and old to keep their magic alive and share their stories through expressive arts. Hopefully the Mayor of London will make good on his pledge to give creatives like me and many others a space at the table to be seen, heard and have our present felt.

I’m excited for the future and for young pioneers to come. I’m currently working on my brand, Nibàsmo, where I’ll have bespoke men’s and women’s design available in the style of ready to wear.
