Black People’s Day of Action

Lewisham Heritage plaque commemorating The Black People’s Day of Action

To honour the legacy of The Black People’s Day of Action, a plaque was mounted at the historic Moonshot centre in Fordham Park, home of IRIE! Dance Theatre.

The unveiling took place on 2 March 2024, the 43rd anniversary of the demonstration and included a drumming workshop, followed by a performance and exhibition exploring the role of drums within protest.

The maroon plaque reads:

When the Black community came together in their thousands to march from Fordham Park against racism 2 March 1981

The unveiling curtain was handmade by local textile artist Gloria Pottinger-Jones, who created a commemorative quilt as part of In Living Memory.

With talks from IRIE!’s founding artistic director Beverley Glean MBE, Russell Proffitt MBE and Desmond Clarke, the event brought the community together in a tribute to the New Cross Fire Tragedy and following demonstrations.

Going to the Triangle (my happy place), an LGBTQ+ centre in Deptford.

One of the many happy memories of the borough.

Postcards: Strange creatures emerging

Image: Postcard collected at Hilly Fields Summer Fayre 2023

I remember Lewisham used to much more civilised and cleaner.. We all loved Chiesmans, pity it’s gone, I worked in the restaurant there.

I also remember the big flood, lots of strange creatures emerged from the flooded river!

Postcards: Ragga tapes and patties

Image: Postcard collected at Hilly Fields Summer Fayre 2023

My brother and I would often walk from our house in SE4 to Lewisham Centre (unaccompanied at age 8!).

I have strong memories of the ‘black market’ wedged between the centre and the high street.

Spliffy jeans, ragga tapes and patties. A different setting from a ‘street food’ market.

Postcards: From the church to the pub

Image: Postcard collected at Hilly Fields Summer Fayre 2023

I remember Charlie the tramp in Deptford Hight Street who was give tea in a milk bottle by Purdy’s the wet fish shop, wo he was related to.

When I walked around the area there were 14 pubs in the High Street and after mass, all the Catholic men would come out of Church and go straight into the pub.

Usually the Mechanic’s Arms next to it.

Postcards: The Battle of Lewisham

Image: Postcard collected at Hilly Fields Summer Fayre 2023

My father ran a shop in Lewisham Way at the time of the Battle of Lewisham. We remained open although getting dirty looks from passing police cars.

There was a stream of people going to New Cross, many caring carrier bags full of bottles. We knew where the marchers were going because we had the radio tuned to the police frequency.

Postcards: Lovers in the rain

Image: Postcard collected at Hilly Fields Summer Fayre 2023

About 1970: I used to walk my dog late at night around Hilly Fields.

One night, in pouring rain, the dog and I came across a couple enjoying each other on the Vicars Hill side of the fields. The didn’t care and we; the dog and I continued on!
